This is the blog for the Phoenix Mental Health Collective which is inspired by theicarusproject.net. During increasingly stressful economic, social, and political times, the collective aims to provide a safe space for discussion and resource sharing centered around mental wellness. This group promotes a radical perspective, but recognizes a variety of approaches in regards to individual experience. We believe that we should empower each other to take charge of our sanity. There are other maps of mental health other than the ones we are handed by families, schools, televisions, and doctors.

We meet every Sunday at 1:30 at Conspire Phoenix. Conspire is located at 901 N. 5th Street in Downtown Phoenix.

Also, this blog is open for all to contribute. If you would like to contribute please email your interest to haveyoulostyourmindPHX@gmail.com.

A Local Meditation Resource: Brian Harrison

One excellent resource for meditation in Phoenix is Brian Harrison. He specializes in chanting mantras in Sanskrit. He hosts a chanting session in Central Phoenix every Thursday at 7:30 PM and you can get information on this gathering by emailing him at briaz861@msn.com. Additionally, he has a blog on chanting at http://bharrisonarts.com/wordpress/?cat=179.

Brian also recommended a wonderful book on chanting titled, Mantra Meditation: Change Your Karma with the Power of Sacred Sound. This book explains the process by which chanting mantras improves your life and it includes a compact disc that teaches the correct pronunciation of mantras in Sanskrit. Personally, I have found chanting a mantra in Sanskrit incredibly fulfilling. I have trouble meditation in complete silence because my mind will keep racing, but repeating a mantra has definitely helped me to quiet my mind. Check out this book, email Brian, or read his blog to learn more!
